John Haines was born in 1963 in New York. In 1987 he received a BFA in Sculpture and Painting from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. During this time he began assisting in the studios of painters such as David Hockney and Sam Francis.
Over the next decade he exhibited his artwork in various cities in Europe, while living in Florence, Italy for several years. After returning to the Bay Area, Haines then chose to study under Master Blacksmith Toby Hickman with the aim of enhancing his metalworking skills and advancing his sculpture.
After 10 years of living in Sonoma County and working as an artist / blacksmith, Haines moved to San Francisco where he currently lives and maintains painting and metal sculpture studios.
