I am a clay hand builder who lives and works at The Sea Ranch,
California. I call my pieces "sculptural ceramics" because the element
of deep textures is a key part of my work. Many pieces are somewhat
organic in nature while others border on the architectural. All
sculptures are sensual and curving in shape and most are commanding in
size and arresting in color with, I hope, an added bit of whimsy. All
pieces are creative impressions.
My artistic training has touched many points of the compass. In
college I was a Theater Arts major and later I became seriously involved
in weaving and lost wax casting and fabrication design of jewelry. I
belong to numerous Northern California art associations and societies and
have served as Gualala Arts Dolphin Gallery coordinator from 1992 to 1996.
The construction of my ceramics employ slab, coil and small units
of
stoneware clay pieced together and melded on the inside of the piece only,
to retain the deep textures I so admire. The design process evolves from
both firm ideas with sketches as well as vague concepts that just have to
be tried. I build both sculptures and sculptural vessels that are large,
exuberant, colorful and enhanced with wildly varying textures. All pieces
are original; there will never be a "copy" as each sculpture is truly "one
of a kind".
Come by during Open Studio Tours and enjoy!
