Anthony Rees has lived and worked as a fine and graphic artist in
Point Arena and San Francisco since 1976. He was born in Wales, UK in
1948, and attended Carmarthen Art School, Newport College of Art and
Cardiff College of Art.
He became interested in painting landscapes since moving to
Mendocino county, painting in black and white, catching tonality and
expressing mood. He collaborated with his wife, handweaver Kersten
Tanner as co-designer and adviser for tapestry designs. He threw
himself into color landscapes after September 11th to cheer himself up
and it did. "My landscapes evolve from memories, dreams, constructs and
direct observations. "
During the 1990's Anthony focused on producing circular art in
prints and cutouts based on design principles of Celt Art and Art
Nuveaux. Starting with Celtic inspired prints he soon discovered that
many people liked the stencils as much if not more than the prints and
he began to produce them as artwork in themselves. He has also applied
these designs to lamp shades and cement garden pieces for tables or
large paving tile. He plans to have some in metal by August for Studio
Discovery which he participated in previously during the very first
years of the Tour.
His current work combines his landscapes with borders inspired by
his design work. He now works on larger paintings than previously.
