In July of 2002 my wife and I purchased a home in Gualala. As a
professional photographer for 35 years and a plein aire painter in oils, I
wanted to meet local artists. What better way than to take photographic
portraits of them?
What started out as a way to introduce myself to the artist community
evolved into a documentary work called Mendonomans, We Share This Land
together. I started to think of it as my sociology, anthropology project.
As I got further into the project I was stunned by the depth and
diversity of the community and how we all share this land and magical
coast together. I decided to add peoples voices to their images. My goal
wasn't to do a "pretty picture" show, but to capture the spirit of this
amazing place.
My portraits seek to capture something inside a person that wants to
get out. An inner world that reflects the active part of who they really
are.
It not only turned into 3 upcoming local gallery shows, it became a
book that captured the essence of the coast. . .It's people. . In turn, it
rekindled my deep passion for the art of photography.
Graduating with a B.S. degree in photography from Rochester Institute
of Technology, I moved to San Francisco and specialized in studio
advertising and corporate annual reports. Some clients include Chevron, PG
& E, Wells Fargo, Frexeinet, Pac Bell, ABM, and Sun Oil.
I am in the private collection of Ansel Adams now at the Center for
Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, Tuscon, a member of
Superstock, a world wide photo agency, and Artisan's Gallery in Mill
Valley.
As a frequent traveler, I look for the beauty in every locale and have
been continually producing art photos for 40 years.
