Kersten Tanner has recently returned to handweaving after a twenty year
hiatus. She is now displaying some of her old glory and excited to explore
new realms. She is particularly inspired by living near the ocean and
observing the interaction of water/sand/rocks/air/reflections of light.
The challenge is to represent these elements realistically and abstractly
in yarn on a loom.
Having spun yarn and woven some in high school, Kersten studied weaving
in Finland for a full year on a college year abroad program. She studied
at weaving schools there in Heinola and at Wetterhoff in Hamenlinna, and
was apprenticed during the summer to tapestry weaver Olga Maki. Her
weaving techniques, yarn usage and sense of design were heavily influenced
by her year studying in Finland.
In the late 1970's and early 80's she worked professionally handweaving
producing many wall hangings and landscape tapestries of the coast line in
and around Point Arena. She also wove scarves, shawls, rugs and yardage.
She is now weaving wall hangings and tapestries again. She has shown her
weaving in Finland, Vermont, Point Arena, Gualala, Mendocino, and San
Francisco. She has taught weaving in New Zealand. and published in the
national Handweavers magazine.
Born in 1952 she grew up in various countries in Europe and on the east
coast of the United States. She has resided in Northern California in
Point Arena (mainly) and San Francisco since 1976.
