Michael Gustavson is a graduate of San Jose State University having
received his M.F.A. in 1977. He has been a professional artist for the
past 27 years. His works are collected throughout the world as well as by
many large corporations. The glazes he uses are very textural and appeal
to the senses causing the viewer to want to touch the work. In his wall
pieces it becomes apparent that Michael is creating glaze paintings. His
techniques create a painterly effect. The fragmented wall pieces are
connected as triptychs and diptychs by texture and composition.
The vessels are thrown on the wheel and then altered by hand. They seem
to push in each direction from the inside. Each vessel gives the
appearance of a torso having no head yet having a turned shoulder, a long
back, or a slight hip, all in motion with the grace of a dancer. These
works continue to change as you walk around them, never repeating a design
as you might expect. Truly, these works are exciting to touch, look at,
and admire!
