My art career began in 1968, while teaching on Guam. As a result of
mentioning to my wife how much I would like to paint the coconut palms,
she presented me with some watercolors and told me to go to work. I
developed my watercolors by experimentation, with lots of disappointments,
until art finally became a pleasant obsession.
During the seventies, my work appeared in many shows sponsored by the
Creative Arts Center of Northern California in the Central Valley. During
the eighties, I participated in art fairs throughout the Bay area. During
the past twenty years, my work has been in many of the shows sponsored by
Gualala Arts. I have been an active member of the North Coast Artists
Guild since 1998, showing on the Studio Discovery Tour.
My medium is transparent watercolor. My style is representational but
tends to be quite loose and impressionistic. Paintings are of larger sizes
(22/28, 24/30, 28/36) to permit free application of pigment and water. The
subject matter of my work ranges from landscape and human activities to
portraits, stilllifes and floral designs. The floral designs are often
abstract and include some original techniques of "nature printing," that
transfer leaves and flowers to watercolor paper.
